Geology: Anatomy of Mid-Ocean Ridges

I chose to take a look at the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Ridge. I took an elevation profile of the ridge and it was interesting to see how the altitude changes so drastically. In the middle you can see how the ridge dips down into a deep valley and then shoots back up. I believe that the middle section is called a rift. The distance I measured across was about 95 miles. An ocean ridge is basically an underwater mountain range formed by plate tectonics. The uprising magma continues to build on the ridge. Here is a basic diagram of how mid-oceanic ridges are formed:
